Introduction
- Share personal stories of dealing with "at risk" youth. Share a story of a successful child as well as a child that has slipped through the cracks. Make sure that each trainer shares at least one story with the new learners.(THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR THE LEARNERS TO SEE YOUR VALIDITY!!!)
Purpose of the workshop
- Explain the three day training and how it will work.
Day 1 is today our workshop will teach you what our management plan is and how it works.
Day 2 is a observation day to see teachers currently implementing our management system within their classrooms. Learners can talk to students and teachers and ask questions. This is the day where the learners get to see the success first hand.
Day 3 is a planning day where teachers get to modify their current management systems and incorporate some of our management tools.
Goals and outcomes of the workshop
- Explain the overall goal of the workshop and then have the learners set their own goals for the workshop. Our overall goal is not to have teachers completely change their management systems but to implement certain characteristics of our management system so that they can better serve their students. Especially those students who are at risk. Realistically this workshop should help the learners make necessary modifications to their current management systems. -Next, explain the overall goal of our management system "Changing at risk youth to youth of promise". Explain how changing one kids life can make such a difference in the long run. Explain the benefits of the management system.
What is at risk youth? - Please share with learners the youtube video of the children at risk.
- Next share our needs assessment and explain what it is. ( This is a slideshow of why the learners need to make modifications to their management systems, it explains what at risk means in great detail)
THIS SLIDE SHOW HAS TONS OF SCARY STATISTICS!!!! PLEASE ALLOW TIME FOR LEARNERS TO STOP AND TALK IN SMALL GROUPS ABOUT EACH STATISTIC!
Break
- Give the learners a 15 minute break to get some fresh air and walk around
Briefly go over a summary of what you have already discussed before break
Why you?
- It is so important to talk about school community and what makes a school community work and what makes a school community have problem or become disfunctional. Do this section as a open discussion. Hear what others have to say and record it all on your poster.
- Ask a teacher, principal, and a counselor to share why they think it is important they are aware of the management system. Let learners elaborate during this discussion.
- As a closing to this section, explain once more why it takes more than the classroom teacher to implement the system.
- Close with explaining that it takes the whole school community to make it work. Management plan - Hand out a copy of our management plan to each learner. - Go through the handout step by step stopping along the way to answer any questions. - Have learners work in groups of five to come up with questions that can be clarified. How do you incorporate this new management plan? - Explain that they do not need to entirely throw out what they are currently using - Give scenarios for implementing parts of our system into existing management systems. - Stress the fact that the system will look differently in each classroom. - Give more scenarios and ask learners to discuss different components of our management system that may be beneficial to that scenario.
Closing/wrap up
ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS AND LISTEN TO COMMENTS
- Close with explaining what is in store for day 2 and passing out placements for observations.
- Talk about the benefits one last time and thank them for coming
- Remind them to take the survey when they get back to their classrooms
